Things are crazy over at The Last Intervention headquarters. Moving along but man, has it been crazy.

Taking a break I found out about Manny Ramirez being busted for Steroids and retiring. I’ve got mixed feelings about the whole thing.

It’s easy to point a finger at the freaks. It much harder to realize we made them who they are. To some, Manny Ramirez is a bum. For a few, he’s a all star veteran. For me he’s just a cat who got lost trying to catch up with himself. I don’t blame him for doing what he did, I blame the league commissioner and the team owners and all the managers and coaches who looked away because when the going was good, pockets got fat and no one had a problem. During that time more than half of the MLB was juiced. No one cared. Within the system it was accepted. But of course it turned into a circus. It’s funny because I feel the same way about plastic surgery. No one really needs to get it but they do it anyway. It makes them feel better about themselves. The need to feel youthful. To feel beautiful. But at what cost. Disfigurement? Why do it? Are the expectations that high?

Yes, they are.

I love baseball but the business of baseball is broken. Other sports are not that far behind because if it’s not about drug use it’s the about crimes that go ignored or overlooked. I’m looking at you NBA/NFL. All you futbol enthusiasts shouldn’t feel off the hook either. And don’t get me started on boxing.

It used to be that a fight or a game was thrown, someone got paid and it was expected. It was part of the game. People still fought. People still gave it their all til their souls would so them in. But now we’re in the business of building superstars. It’s all about branding. Here’s a little drinking game for ya…look up any major sports them and if the field, arena or stadium is named after something you can buy or place where you can buy something take a shot. Start now. And…now…you…are…drunk.

Sorry, Manny. Sorry, Sammy. Sorry Mets teams from 1994-2001.

Sorry for pointing the finger and expecting nothing but the best. I forgot you were all kids once, too.

While I let my heart simmer down I’m gonna end this little rant with a little something from the best boxing movie ever made.

“I remember those cheers,
They still ring in my ears,
And for years they remain in my thoughts.
‘Cause one night I took off my robe,
And what’d I do? I forgot to wear shorts.
I recall every fall, every hook, every jab,
The worst way a guy can get rid of his flab,
As you know, my life wasn’t drab.
Though I’d rather hear you cheer
When I delve into Shakespeare …
‘A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!’
I haven’t had a winner in six months.
And though I’m no Olivier,
If he fought Sugar Ray, he would say
That the thing ain’t the ring, it’s the play.
So give me a stage
Where this bull here can rage,
And though I can fight,
I’d much rather recite.
That’s entertainment.”
